<image:title>Research News - New research: Bogong moths - Each year, Bogong moths (Agrotis infusa) migrate up to 1,000 km to reach cool, alpine caves they haven’t never visited before, where they aestivate over the summer. A new study by researchers, including AIAS member Ken Green, has revealed that these moths rely on the night sky as a compass, using stars to navigate with remarkable precision. Even when their magnetic sense was disabled, the Bogong moths still oriented themselves in the correct migratory direction under natural night skies. By tracking brain activity, researchers discovered that specific visual neurons responded to the rotation of the stars, helping the moths stay on course. This discovery reveals the remarkable navigational abilities of Bogong moths as they traverse the Australian Alps.</image:title>

<image:title>Research News - Vale Distinguished Professor Jamie Kirkpatrick AM 12/10/1946 – 21/10/2024 - The Australian alpine research community is deeply saddened by the loss of Jamie Kirkpatrick, who passed away peacefully on the 21st of October 2024. Jamie had just recently presented his research at the 2024 AIAS meeting in Hobart, just a few weeks prior to his passing. He gave a talk “Predicting spatial variation in the upper limit of trees on the alpine mountains of lutruwita (Tasmania)”. Jamie also just launched three books on his 78th birthday on the 12th of October in the company of many past students, colleagues friends and family; Ecology Underfoot, Phantasms and the Family and The Rest of Nature, Place and People in the Plague Years.</image:title>

<image:title>Newsletters - Australian Institute of Alpine Studies Newsletter 01 - Since joining the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) community, AMRF has expanded its capacity to connect and support Australia’s alpine research community. This integration has made it possible for the AMRF to provide direct support to the AIAS, including the delivery of this new quarterly newsletter, to help connect researchers, students, and land managers working in alpine and subalpine ecosystems.</image:title>

<image:title>Newsletters - Australian Institute of Alpine Studies Newsletter 01 - Hobart Symposia to celebrate Professor Jamie Kirkpatrick</image:title>
<image:caption>A symposium was recently held at the University of Tasmania to honour Professor Jamie Kirkpatrick. The event drew around 150 registrations and featured a diverse range of speakers sharing alpine research and reflecting on Jamie’s many contributions to projects and the field of alpine science. Though not a typical symposium, many talks were filled with humour and warmth, celebrating both the life and lasting legacy of Professor Jamie Kirkpatrick.
